Johnson Creek Clean-up

Saturday August 29th, 2009

The Overland Park Coalition invites you to help clean up the Johnson Creek that flows through the heart of the Overland Park neighborhood.  We have partnered with SOLV, Johnson Creek Watershed Council, North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District, Portland Parks, Friends of Tideman Johnson, and area churches - Season of Service.  This is the 2nd annual clean up and plan on cleaning up another 2 miles of the creek.  We plan on cleaning Johnson Creek from 86th Ave. west to Mcloughlin Ave.

We need volunteers for the following tasks:

Team Leader - This person will be in charge of approximately 10 team members.  A cell phone will be required to contact the event coordinator.

Creek Clean-up - The creek bottom is covered with large and slippery rocks.  The going is slow and some sections of the creek are very challenging.  Volunteers in the creek will be required to wear adequate foot wear and gloves.  You will get wet and dirty.

First Aid - Each team will have at least one member with basic first aid experience.  This volunteer may be involved with creek clean-up or a team support person.

Trail Clean up - We will also be cleaning the Springwater Corridor Trail that follows the creek.  This is a low impact task.

Event site workers.  We need volunteers to work the event site.  Duties include volunteer registration, food servers, cook hamburgers and hot dogs, site clean up, and miscellaneous tasks.

The event is located at Mill Park, along Johnson Creek near the corner of Linwood Ave. and Overland St.  Additional parking is located at the Crosswhite Industrial Park (map).

8 - 9 am:  Volunteer sign-in at Mill Park.  Each volunteer must sign in to participate in this event.  Early registration at the website (below) is welcome.  Due to safety concerns, children under 12, accompanied by parent, will only be allowed in the creek at Mill Park.  Children 12 to 18 must have waiver signed by adult.  Enjoy Starbucks coffee, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, bagels and cream cheese.

9 - 9:15 am:  Opening ceremony and safety talk.

9:15 am - 1 pm:  The Clean-up.  Teams will work on their section of the creek.  We are planning at 11 teams to cover the creek and 3 teams to clean the Springwater Corridor Trail.  Transportation provided.  Click here for a map of the event teams.

1 - 3 pm:  Post Clean-up party at Mill Park.  The Coalition will host a thank you BBQ for the volunteers.  Food sponsored by Fred Meyer.  Enjoy the closing ceremony.
